Sight Reading Practice for
Singapore Players

The specimen book is not the skill. Sight reading is a 30-second scan plus a pulse you refuse to drop — we teach it on piano and guitar at KGMA so an unseen page still sounds like music.

1. Thirty seconds, then go

  • Scan: key, time, tempo word, first hand shape, the hardest bar.
  • You may try any of it aloud. The examiner is not marking the look.
  • If you cannot keep a pulse, the notes do not matter yet.

2. ABRSM vs Trinity tax

  • ABRSM: compulsory from Grade 1. 21 of 150. Same weight as scales.
  • Trinity: optional in supporting tests to Grade 5. Compulsory from Grade 6.
  • Trinity's extract sits about two grades below the paper. It is still a performance.

3. HDB 15 minutes

  • Headphones on an 88-key digital piano, or a quiet guitar with the door closed.
  • One unseen page. 30-second scan. One continuous take. No restart.
  • After about 10pm, keep it on headphones or stop.

4. Exam track vs leisure

  • A certificate is paper. A church chart on Sunday is the same muscle.
  • Leisure students still read. We just use songs they actually like.
  • We will sit the paper if you want it. We will not let the paper delete the pulse.
