ABRSM vs Trinity Piano for
Singapore Players

The flyer is not the musician. We pick ABRSM or Trinity the way we pick a set list — by the hands in the room, not by what the neighbour's child sat last year.

1. Two papers, one bench

  • ABRSM: lists A, B, and C. 150 marks. Sight-reading and aural from Grade 1.
  • Trinity: any three from the book. 100 marks. Supporting tests you actually choose.
  • Neither is the easy board. They are different jobs with the same 88 keys.

2. Grade 5 is a gate

  • ABRSM Grade 6, 7, and 8 need Grade 5 theory or a named equivalent.
  • Trinity does not require that paper. The map still helps the song.
  • We will sit the gate if you want ABRSM. We will not let the gate delete the ear.

3. HDB 15 minutes

  • Headphones on an 88-key digital piano. Neighbours hear nothing.
  • Scales without pedalling. One sight-reading sample. Eight bars of one piece.
  • After about 10pm, keep it on headphones or stop.

4. Exam vs leisure

  • A certificate is paper. A phrase that breathes is the job.
  • Leisure students get the same scales and ears over songs they actually like.
  • Trinity Rock & Pop is a third paper if the songs are the point.
