Barre Chords for Beginner
Guitarists in Singapore

Most guitarists in Singapore can form a G. Few of them can hold an F without turning the left hand into a clamp.

1. Leverage, not a clamp

  • E-shape: movable E or Em, root on the sixth string.
  • A-shape: movable A or Am, root on the fifth.
  • Index is a nut. Thumb behind. Elbow in. Force is a last resort.

2. HDB 15 minutes

  • Start at fret 5–7. The first-fret F is the worst first homework.
  • Night: electric into a headphone amp, closed-back cans.
  • After about 10pm, keep it on headphones or stop.

3. Blame the action first

  • Singapore humidity swells wood. High action is not weak fingers.
  • Hard case plus a two-way pack beats a stand in 80 percent air.
  • Light strings and a setup before a motivational speech.

4. Exam vs leisure

  • Trinity Rock & Pop: partial barres around Grade 3; more full barres later.
  • ABRSM classical: partial barrés named at Grade 6, full at Grade 8.
  • Leisure songs still need a change that keeps time. Capo is honest until then.
