Fingerstyle vs Strumming for
Guitar Beginners

Most beginners in Singapore can form a G chord. Few of them can decide what the right hand is for — a pick that keeps time, or four fingers that try to be a band.

1. Two jobs, one right hand

  • Strumming: one clock — downstrokes, then DDUUDU.
  • Fingerstyle: PIMA. Thumb is the kick. Fingers are hats.
  • If the pick stops for a chord change, you do not have rhythm yet.

2. HDB volume is a choice

  • A full acoustic strum fills a 4-room. Fingerstyle is quieter, not silent.
  • Night: electric into a headphone amp, closed-back cans.
  • Quiet-hour norms: treat 10pm to 8am as no instruments through the wall.

3. Rhythm before independence

  • G, C, D, Em, Am at 70–80 BPM before Travis picking.
  • Mute-string downstrokes first. Chords are a privilege.
  • Month-one target: pulse that survives the change.

4. Exam track vs leisure track

  • Trinity Rock & Pop: pick unless the song is fingerpicked.
  • ABRSM classical nails are a different religion. Say so in the trial.
  • Leisure songs still need a downbeat. Prestige arpeggios do not replace it.
