Jazz Piano Voicings for
Singapore Players
The player who sits in a band is rarely the one who stacked a louder triad. We steal jazz piano voicings — 3 and 7, then the rootless shape — and park them on a digital piano in an HDB.

1. Guide tones are the job
- 3 and 7 tell the quality. The root is a label.
- Dm7 is F and C. G7 is F and B. Cmaj7 is E and B.
- If you rebuild a triad on every change, you do not have a shell.
2. Rootless A and B
- Type A: 3 on the bottom. Type B: 7 on the bottom.
- ii–V keeps three voices still. One inner note slips.
- Thumb between C4 and C5. Lower is mud on an HDB board.
3. HDB 15 minutes
- Headphones, 88 weighted keys, door closed.
- 68–80 BPM. Shells first. Ninths later.
- After about 10pm, keep it on headphones or stop.
4. Exam vs the band
- Classical ABRSM arpeggios stay root position. The singer does not.
- Jazz Performance Grades 6–8 name comping voicing. Trinity hears a chart.
- Leisure track gets the same 3 and 7 over songs they actually play.

Most beginners in Singapore can stamp a triad. Few of them can sit under a singer without the left hand restating the root on every downbeat. The missing piece is almost never a harder song. It is jazz piano voicings: the 3 and the 7, then the colour, with someone else owning the floor.
Walk into a KGMA room on King George's Avenue and you will hear the same freeze. A student who can nail a Grade piece in root-position C, then dies the moment we ask for F and C under a Dm7 and a melody on top. The hands know the letters. The ears do not know a shell. That is not a talent problem. It is a voicing problem.
We study Jeremy Monteiro the way a coach studies film. One idea. Not a biography. Singapore's King of Swing learned chord colours in a music shop, then spent a career leaving the singer a lane. Steal the 3 and the 7. Do not steal a resume.
What jazz piano voicings actually are
Technically: a choice about which chord tones you keep. A triad plays 1, 3, and 5. A seventh chord adds 7. Jazz piano voicings keep the notes that tell the quality and drop the ones a bass already has. The 3 says major or minor. The 7 says major-seven, dominant, or minor-seven. The root is a label. The fifth is often furniture.
That is not the same job as an inversion. Our write-up on piano inversions for Singapore players keeps every chord tone and changes the bass. C, C/E, C/G are three addresses of the same triad. A voicing decides the furniture. Dm7 as F and C is a guide-tone shell. Add A and E and you have a rootless Dm9. The letters grew. The hand barely moved.
Guide tones are the whole trick
We teach two notes before we teach four. Dm7: F and C. G7: F and B. Cmaj7: E and B. Play those pairs in the middle of the keyboard. The common tone F stays from ii to V. C walks a semitone to B. That is voice leading, not a sprinkle. If you rebuild a root-position stack on every change, you do not have shell voicings. You have three commutes and a muddy thumb.
Rootless shapes wait until the pair is boring. Type A puts the 3 on the bottom: Dm9 as F–A–C–E, G13 as F–A–B–E, Cmaj9 as E–G–B–D. Three voices hold from ii to V. One inner note slips. Type B puts the 7 on the bottom: Dm9 as C–E–F–A, G13 as B–E–F–A, C6/9 as A–D–E–G. Bill Evans did not invent the grammar. He made it the default left hand. Monteiro lists Evans among the players he actually studies. Steal the stillness. Leave the biography on the shelf.
Register is a rule, not a vibe. The top note of a left-hand voicing should live between middle C and the C above it. Too low and an HDB digital piano turns the cluster into mud. Too high and the singer has no ceiling. We call it the rule of thumb because the thumb is the top note. If that thumb sits on F3 under a ballad, you are practising a fog machine.
Why Singapore players skip the 3 and the 7
Three local pressures, stacked.
First, the exam factory. Classical ABRSM piano still wants scales and root-position arpeggios. Students conclude, reasonably and wrongly, that a seventh is decoration. ABRSM Jazz Piano Performance Grades from 2026 are blunter at the top: Grades 6 to 8, Lists A and B, expect a lead sheet with a clear melody, an accompaniment, and an improvised solo that uses suitable jazz vocabulary and comping voicing. Trinity Rock & Pop keyboards will hear a chart. Auto-chords fail. Neither paper names Type A. Examiners hear whether the page survived. A singer hears whether you doubled the bass.
Second, HDB. If you live in a flat, you already practise scared. Weighted digitals go on headphones. Uprights get abandoned. Students compensate by parking every chord as a cautious C–E–G so the slab does not complain. The left hand never visits F and B as a pair. The damper stays down because the wash hides the stamp. Headphones give you the dynamic range back. They do not voice the chord for you.
Third, the tutorial addiction. Search jazz piano voicings and you will find a hundred videos at full speed with a ninth on the first bar. Reels reward a face and a cluster. The job rewards two notes that move a semitone. The first month becomes a race to a tritone substitute before the student can keep F and C still for eight bars.
The exam track versus the leisure track
At KGMA we run both. If you want classical ABRSM or Trinity, we will get you through the book. We will also refuse to let the book delete the shell. If you want the jazz performance paper, we will treat the lead sheet as a job, not a photograph. Leisure students get the same guide tones over songs they actually play — a church pad, a Mandopop last line, the City Pop hook that only works if the piano stops arguing with the bass. The job does not change. The repertoire does. A Grade 8 distinction will not raise a set if you still stamp roots under a singer.
How we teach jazz piano voicings in the studio
Shells first. Always. Two notes. Song key. Quarter-note click at 72 to 80. You play ii–V–I as if the metronome were a bass player who will not move for you. If the inner voice leaps a third when a semitone was available, you rushed the furniture.
Name the jobs out loud. "F is 3 of D minor. C is 7. Now C walks to B." If you cannot say the degree while you play, you do not own the pair yet. Speed is a vanity metric. Stillness is the product. We have had adults lock the shell in two lessons and teenagers take six. Age is not the variable. Attention is.
Roots on one, colour after
Solo piano is a different room. Nobody else has the floor, so beat 1 can take the root in the left fifth finger, then the guide tones on the and of 2. That is a texture, not a new theory. Combo piano drops the root. Church and pop rooms in Singapore often sit between those jobs: a guitar already has 1 and 5, or a playback track owns the bass. If you double that floor with a fat triad, you are not helping. You are a second bass with a story.
Monteiro learned voicings the unromantic way — Willy Hoe showing shapes at City Music, next to the old St Joseph's neighbourhood on Bras Basah. He has also said what the exam factory felt like: scales, the same four pieces, passing. Steal the correction. Colour is a shape you can hear. It is not a louder triad. His other film note is timing: sound at the instant the note is meant. If every inner voice arrives early because you are grabbing a new stack, you do not have time. You have a panic with five fingers.
A 15-minute HDB voicing drill that survives the block
You do not need a 90-minute lockout. You need an 88-key weighted digital piano, closed-back headphones, a closed door, and a metronome. Neighbours will survive nothing if you "just try the speakers quietly" at 10.15pm after the MRT ride home from Lavender. This is voicing practice in an HDB, not a recital for the corridor.
- Minutes 1–3: Guide tones only. ii–V–I in C: F–C, F–B, E–B. 68 to 76 BPM. No ninths. No pedal. Name 3 and 7 out loud. If forte and piano feel identical, the home board is the suspect before the voicing is.
- Minutes 4–8: Type A rootless. Dm9 F–A–C–E, G13 F–A–B–E, Cmaj9 E–G–B–D. Keep the thumb between C4 and C5. If three notes do not hold from ii to V, you rebuilt the chord. Stop and hold the common tones.
- Minutes 9–12: The same A-form in G: Am9 C–E–G–B, D13 C–E–F#–B, Gmaj9 B–D–F#–A. Black keys are not an emergency. If you freeze, drop 8 BPM. Do not open a tab for a lick.
- Minutes 13–15: One leisure song or one eight-bar lead-sheet phrase. Left hand stays in the shell. Right hand sings the melody or stays out. One continuous take, phone memo. If every downbeat is a root-position triad, you practised stamps.
Fifteen minutes before dinner beats a binge that leaves the neighbours drafting a note. After about 10pm, keep it on headphones or stop. Monteiro still practises about an hour and a half, five days a week. We are not assigning his calendar. Steal the maintenance idea: short, daily, specific. Month-one target: guide tones plus Type A in C and G, at 72 to 80 BPM, for two minutes, without a leap. A 61-key toy will cut the register and lie about touch. Sit 88 weighted keys, or come to the room.
Putting jazz piano voicings on a real song
The money skill is not the prettiest cluster you saved for the last eight bars. It is playing the verse at the same height you used for the intro, then leaving the singer a lane. Mandopop and English pop both punish a pianist who restates the root because the chorus "needs energy." Energy is one new tension, or one held common tone. It is not a sudden triad plus a damper wash.
Church students: your MD needs a pad that lasts to the third service. If you cannot play F and B under a tired Sunday melody to a phone metronome in an HDB, a full upright will only make your stamp more expensive. That is the same job we wrote about in session musician skills for Singapore players. The voicing is that job with a specific left hand.
Melody on top, shell underneath
When you play and sing, the right hand wants the tune plus a chunky triad. That is how the thumb fights the voice. Keep the shell in the left hand. Let the voice own the top. If the melody sits on E over Cmaj7, you already have E in the Type A shape. Do not add another E an octave lower and call it support. You doubled the singer.
Monteiro has talked about Ahmad Jamal stating a melody the first time, clean. Steal that order. Head first. Colour second. ABRSM's jazz performance paper says the same thing in colder language: the Head needs a clear melody and an appropriate accompaniment from the chord sequence.
Esplanade programmes and Bandwagon listings will still throw you a standard that leaves the four-chord island. We do not invent a bill or a set time. Hear 3 and 7 before you hunt a tritone substitute on a reel. If you want a live room this week, pick a listing those sites actually posted — or Timbre, or *SCAPE — and steal one bar of how the pianist withholds the root. Do not steal a downbeat we did not see.
Mistakes we stop in the first month
Stamping a triad on every downbeat because "it feels empty." Empty is the point. The bass has 1. The singer has the sentence. Fill the middle with 3 and 7, not with another root.
Calling inversions a voicing and stopping there. C/E is still a triad. Useful. Not a shell. If you cannot drop the root, you have not started jazz piano voicings yet. You have changed the floor and kept the furniture.
Starting on drop-2 and upper-structure triads because a tutorial did. Two notes. Then four. Then a ninth. If the inner voice still leaps, you went early.
Playing the cluster too low so the HDB board growls. Rule of thumb: top note between C4 and C5. Thumb on F3 is mud.
Leaving the sustain pedal down so the voice-leading disappears. Lift on the change. If the change is a rebuild, the pedal only publishes the rebuild to the corridor.
Treating Grade 8 as a jazz resume. The paper is a real achievement. A producer will not read it while the red light is on. Ask us in the trial lesson whether you want the exam track or the leisure track. Book the $20 trial. Bring a song you only know as C, G, Am, and F. We will take the roots away and keep the metronome on.
A two-hour "voicing camp" because a reel said more is better. Fifteen focused minutes beats a neighbour with a note. If 3 and 7 are still late, stop. Come in.
When the voicing starts serving the singer
You will know jazz piano voicings are working when a teacher or bandmate says the chorus feels clearer and you did not add a single root. That is the point. The 3 and the 7 sat still. The ninth arrived as colour, not as a stunt. The singer got a lane.
From there we hang the same habit on a church pad that does not march, and a last-chorus lift that is one tension rather than a shout. Monteiro's "big sound versus loudness" line is the same test. A fat triad is loud. A held guide tone is big.
If you already sit with us, bring a song that only exists as four stamps. We will voice 3 and 7 before we discuss a fill. Inversions are the walk. Session skills are the job. Jazz piano voicings are what happens when those two meet a left hand that stops restating the bass.
Show up with short nails, headphones if you practise in an HDB, and a willingness to play smaller than your ego. The room on King George's Avenue is a workshop. The singer, when you finally leave them a lane, will thank you.
Steal the Idea, Not the Ego
We study players the way a coach studies film: one technique you can take into next week's lesson at KGMA.
